A Rose by any other Name…

Valentine’s is a day when the loved-up feel smug and the single feel smited. And the florists, jewellers and card manufacturers make a killing. But without being too cynical and caustic about the annual holiday of luuurve, it is suffice to say that it’s guaranteed to be red. And Sparkly. And undeniably cheesy.

St. Valentine’s Day began as a celebration of one or more early saints named Valentinus. Several stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14. A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians who were persecuted under the Roman empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell.
Because we like to see our staff being involved in positive internal activities other than the creating of banners, a Valentine’s Week itinerary was recently set up, including a trivia questionnaire, Best Dressed  contest, and a cupid hunt – where employees needed to search for a cupid sticker that had been surreptitiously hidden within each department. On Friday 14th February, the victor of the questionnaire was declared to be Miss Hollie from the Expand a Sign Art Studio. Hollie enjoys long walks on the beach, pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. She also has a penchant for cartoon skulls. It’s actually quite creepy. Hollie has been looking for love in all the wrong places.

The Best Dressed title went to Kent, Expand a Sign’s IT guru. Having placed top 3 in the 2013 Halloween costume contest, Kent evidently has a natural flair for design and fashion. Happily married and with 2 lovely children, Kent is comfortable with his manly metrosexual status. Kent likes to think of himself as the modern Superman; an over-achieving office worker by day, a super hero by night. Kent has reality avoidance issues.

Amon was victorious in winning the cupid hunt. Like with Hollie and Kent, Amon won a hamper filled with chocolates, cookies, sweets and teddies. And because Amon is in a relationship, his prize will be shared with the one he loves. As is Zandile, who narrowly lost to snappy dresser Kent.

With the month of hearts and romance drawing to a close, we can all get back to the business of arguing over dirty dishes and forgotten anniversaries. And for us at Expand a Sign, the mission to manufacture the most magnificent merchandise.

Cheers,
Expand a Sign MatchMakers.

 Amon Kent Zandile
