What the Font?!

What the font?!

A font is the particular size, weight and style of a typeface. In modern usage with the advent of digital design, “font” is frequently synonymous with the use of vector or outlines, which means that different sizes of a typeface can be dynamically generated from one design. Each style may still be in a separate “font file”—for instance, the typeface “Arial” may include the fonts “Arial Roman”, “Arial Italic”, “Arial Bold”, etc, – but the term “font” might be applied either to one of these alone or to the whole typeface.

There are quite literally tens of thousands of fonts available to designers for creating artwork and logos. Understandably, it is fairly difficult to download or purchase every one. A computer with too many fonts installed on its’ processor will have a reduced performance, slowing the creative process significantly.

But fear not, for there is a solution. When submitting your artwork to Expand a Sign our artwork studio recommends that you always convert the font to outlines in order to preserve the appearance of the font files (If you aren’t a graphic designer and we’ve lost you, that’s okay too. Just keep reading). This will allow anyone to successfully open your artwork file with the correct fonts instead of the text reverting to another font, which is what would otherwise occur.

The only limitation when converting fonts to outlines is that the text cannot be edited further once saved. Which means no spelling errors!

If you are still a little unsure about the requirements when sending through artwork, our sales staff are pretty knowledgeable and clued up about it. Contact us on sales@expandasign.net or 0860 744 688.

Cheers,
Expand a Sign.
